The President of Ashghal further recalled that the first tunnel at Mesaimeer interchange was opened to traffic in October 2019, six months prior to the schedule, and other parts will be opened soon, and the project is scheduled to be completed by next year, 2020.

The President pointed out that Ashghal is committed to its integrated plan to serve the citizens’ subdivisions as a top priority. Works are ongoing on several vital areas such as Al Wukair South, Al Ebb, Leabaib, Al Kharaitiyat, West Muaither and some other areas to provide services to more than 16,500 residential subdivisions. Ashghal is also working tendering similar projects to serve 12 areas in the state covering 16900 subdivisions.

Features of the Interchange

The new three-level interchange is the first of its kind in Qatar and it includes nine tunnels to provide free-flow traffic. The 6.1 km long interchange consists of three to four lanes in each direction to accommodate about 20,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

The interchange also contains two major bridges. One of them connects Rawdat Al Khail Street and Industrial Area Road in both directions, and the other one connecting E-Ring Road with the southern part of Doha Expressway in one direction, ensuring a smooth flow of traffic in all directions.

The interchange also includes pedestrian and bicycle lanes along 23km with three pedestrian bridges.

Hexagonal Interchange

The Mesaimeer Interchange is the first of its kind in Qatar connecting six main roads, namely E-Ring Road, Doha Expressway, southern part of Doha Expressway, Sabah Al Ahmed Corridor, Industrial Area Road and Rawdat Al Khail Street.

The interchange also provides vital traffic link between the south, central and north of the country. It links traffic from the south through southern part of Doha Expressway, main carriageway of Doha Expressway and North Road.

It also links traffic between the industrial area and central Doha through Rawdat Al Khail Street intersecting D-Ring road, C-Ring road and B-Ring road, as well as it connects neighborhoods of Nuaija, Al Thumama, Abu Hamour, Al Mamoura and Mesaimeer, besides providing ease of access to Al Wakra, Al Wukair and Industrial Area.

The road is located in a busy area that accommodates many vital facilities including Al Thumama Stadium, one of the World Cup venue, where three pedestrian bridges are included in the project to ease people’s access to Al Thumama Stadium.

The interchange also serves many important educational, health and commercial facilities such as Medical Commission, Meteorological Department, many schools, health centers and commercial entities.
The interchange also includes a sophisticated intelligent transport system where surveillance cameras and vehicle number monitors will be installed along with an emergency traffic system to ensure better traffic control in Qatar.

Integral to Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor

The Mesaimeer Interchange integrates with Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor linking Al-Wattiyyat Interchange, which is a strategic link between the southern part of Doha Expressway and its main carriageway. This link provides a free flow traffic between the north and south of the country through Doha city. The project is one of the vital interchanges in the country as it consists of two levels comprising three bridges and four underpasses for easy access of vehicles to the neighborhoods of Al Thumama, Mesaimeer, Abu Hamour, Nuaija, Al Wakra and Al Wukair. The interchange is also important in the provision of free flow traffic for commuters from these areas to Hamad International Airport, to southern areas, Doha city and northern areas of Qatar.

Ashghal is also on the verge of launching similar projects to serve 12 regions in the state covering Mebaireek, East Al Wajbah, Duhail, Umm Lekhba, Rawdat Al Jahhaniya, Semaisma and Jeryan Najima and others to serve more than 16,900 subdivisions in these areas and the projects are in the stage of tendering and awarding.

The project at Al Wukair South, one of the new citizens’ subdivisions, is supposed to serve more than 4,500 residential plots and Ashghal has already provided road and drainage services to more than 2,000 of them. The project aims to provide infrastructure for Al Wukair area through construction of major drainage networks along 166 km, a rainwater drainage network and 310 km long groundwater drainage network.  The road works include internal and external roads network with a total length of 172 km, with 27 intersections linking Al Wukair South neighborhood with main roads and facilitating transport between Doha, Al Wukair and Al Wakra.

The project also includes provision of safe entries to all residential and commercial facilities to be built in the area. This includes installing streetlight poles and signboards to enhance traffic safety.

The project started in April 2018 has already covered around 56% of works and is planned for completion in the third quarter of 2020.
