Qatar keen to ensure Qatari women’s presence in International Forums

The State of Qatar affirmed its keenness to ensure that Qatari women have a distinguished presence in representing the State in international human rights forums,

noting that several remarkable Qatari women enjoy membership in a number of treaty committees to which Qatar is a member.

This came in the speech of the State of Qatar delivered by Second Secretary of Qatar’s Permanent Mission in Geneva Maha Al Meadadi during the annual discussion on the integration of a gender perspective throughout the work of the Human Rights Council and that of its mechanisms, in the framework of the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council, currently in session in Geneva.

Al Meadadi underlined that women in the State of Qatar have enjoyed considerable attention from the leadership of the State,

and this is reflected in the adoption of national policies and legislation that empower them and build their capacity by providing education and training opportunities and holding public positions, including leadership positions.

She noted that the integration of human rights the perspective of women into the work and mechanisms of the Human Rights Council contribute to the implementation of the Council’s mandate to promote universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms on an equal and non-discriminatory basis.

In order to achieve this goal, women should be given the opportunity to become members of the Council’s mechanisms, particularly the special procedures mechanism, the advisory committee, as well as the inquiry and truth commissions and other mechanisms established by the Council, she said.

Al Meadadi encouraged the integration of a women’s rights perspective in the formulation of Council resolutions and the submission of the recommendations of the universal periodic review, taking into account the rights of groups requiring special attention, for example older women, persons with disabilities, migrant and refugee women.

In conclusion, the State of Qatar stressed the importance of conducting systematic analytical studies that show the progress made and the challenges facing the integration of women’s rights within the Council’s mandate and mechanisms.
