Although party leadership has criticised Trump’s role in the January 6 insurrection at the US capitol, his hold on the party remains strong. Forty-five out of 50 Republican senators voted last week to dismiss the upcoming trial, arguing it was unconstitutional to impeach a former president. So will loyalty to Trump split the party?
